Why Surface Cleaning Doesn't Fix Pet Odor
Urine soaks through the carpet backing into the pad underneath, and sometimes into the subfloor itself. A surface clean or a store-bought carpet shampoo only addresses what’s visible on top, so the odor source keeps sitting underneath – which is why a spot that’s been “cleaned” often smells again once humidity rises. Getting rid of the odor for good usually means treating the pad layer, not just the carpet fiber.
Our Process
How We Treat Pet Stains and Odor
1
UV Inspection
A UV light can reveal old stains that are no longer visible to the eye but still contributing to lingering odor, so we can treat what is actually there rather than guessing.
2
Enzyme-Based Treatment
We use enzyme-based treatments that break down the organic compounds causing the odor, rather than masking it with fragrance.
3
Pad-Level Treatment When Needed
For urine that has reached the pad, this can mean treating from underneath – pulling back the carpet at the affected spot to reach the pad directly – rather than only working from the top.
4
Honest Assessment
For older or repeated staining, we'll tell you honestly if the pad needs to be replaced in that section rather than promising a surface treatment will fully solve it.
New Pet Accidents vs. Older, Set-In Odor
Fresh Accidents
The easiest case to treat. Blot up as much moisture as possible and call before it fully dries.
Older, Set-In Odor
Harder to resolve. Common with untrained puppies or senior pets, since the odor compounds have had time to bond with the fibers and pad. We assess which situation you're in before quoting.
Whole-Room Odor
When odor has spread beyond one spot, we assess the full room rather than treating a single stain in isolation.
Prevention After Treatment
Once a spot is treated, a fiber protector can help reduce how deeply future accidents soak in.
What's Involved in Odor Treatment
Enzyme-based treatment
Breaks down odor-causing compounds rather than masking them.
Pad-level treatment when needed
Reaches urine that's soaked past the carpet backing.
Honest assessment
We'll tell you if pad replacement is the real fix, not oversell a surface treatment.
When Odor Reaches the Subfloor
In older homes and basements around Kingston, carpet is often installed directly over concrete rather than plywood. Concrete is porous, and once urine wicks past the pad and into the slab itself, the odor source sits inside the concrete rather than on top of it. Cleaning the carpet and even replacing the pad won't resolve this on its own – the concrete usually needs a dedicated sealing step to lock the odor in permanently, otherwise it resurfaces as humidity and temperature shift with the seasons.
Timing still matters more than almost anything else in the outcome. A pet accident treated within the first hour or two, before it has had time to migrate downward, almost always responds well to standard enzyme treatment at the surface. The same accident left overnight, or repeated in the same spot over several weeks, has typically worked its way through every layer, turning what could have been a simple spot treatment into a multi-layer job involving the pad and possibly the subfloor beneath it.
Pet Stain & Odor FAQs
Will the odor come back after treatment?
If the source is fully treated, including the pad where needed, it shouldn't. Odor that returns after a surface-only clean usually means the source wasn't fully addressed the first time.
Do I need to replace the carpet pad?
Only in cases of repeated or heavy staining where the pad has fully absorbed urine. We'll tell you honestly if that's the case rather than treating it as a given.
Can you treat multiple spots from different pets over time?
Yes – we assess each affected area individually since staining history often varies spot to spot.
Do you handle this for rental units between tenants?
Yes, this is a common part of rental-unit turnover cleaning – see our commercial carpet cleaning page for turnover work.
