Why Area Rugs Need Different Care
Not fixed in place
Unlike wall-to-wall carpet, an area rug isn't glued to the subfloor, so it can shift and needs to be handled differently during cleaning.
Backing can shrink
Over-wetting can shrink the backing unevenly, so we control moisture carefully for each rug.
Assessed before cleaning
We check a rug's construction and fiber before choosing a method rather than running every rug through the same process.
Fringe needs separate care
Fringe and edge trim are cleaned and dried separately from the pile so they do not mat down or discolor differently than the rest of the rug.
Area Rug Fiber Types We Clean
Wool
Holds up well to professional cleaning but is sensitive to high heat and harsh solutions, which can cause browning or fiber damage if handled wrong.
Synthetic (nylon, polypropylene, polyester)
Generally more forgiving and dries faster than natural fibers.
Natural-fiber flatweaves (jute, sisal)
Need a low-moisture approach since heavy wetting can damage them.
Silk & Silk-Blend
Delicate and easily damaged by standard methods, silk and silk-blend rugs get a gentler, low-moisture approach with close attention to colour bleed.
Our Process
How We Approach Every Rug
1
Assess the rug
We check construction and fiber type before choosing a cleaning method.
2
Clean by fiber
Wool, synthetic and natural-fiber flatweaves each get a method suited to that material.
3
Repair if needed
Fraying or unfinished edges can be bound during the same visit.
4
Dry flat and even
Rugs are dried flat rather than left rolled or folded, so the pile and backing dry evenly without new creases or shrinkage.
Rug Cleaning Covers
Deep cleaning
Soil, dust and allergens flushed from deep in the pile.
Stain and odor treatment
Targeted treatment for pet accidents and spills.
Edge binding
For rug edges that are fraying, unraveling, or were cut without a finished edge. Can be done as part of a cleaning job or on its own.
Rug Protector Application
An optional fiber protector can be applied after cleaning to help repel future spills before they set in.
On-Site or Drop-Off Rug Cleaning
Small and medium area rugs can often be cleaned on-site alongside your regular carpet cleaning, while larger or more delicate rugs, including wool and hand-knotted pieces, are sometimes better handled off-site where we can control drying conditions more closely. We’ll tell you which approach suits your rug rather than defaulting to whichever is easier for us.
Fringe Needs Different Handling Than the Rest of the Rug
Many rugs, especially wool and handmade pieces, have fringe that's attached separately from the woven field. Fringe usually soils and yellows faster than the body of the rug because it takes the brunt of foot traffic, vacuum contact and furniture legs, but it's also more fragile and can't be scrubbed or agitated the way the pile can. We clean fringe with a gentler, more controlled process and make sure it's fully dry before the rug goes back into use, since damp fringe pressed against flooring or a baseboard can wick dirt back in or start to smell.
Choosing Between On-Site and Off-Site Cleaning
A rug's size, fiber and how soiled it is all factor into whether cleaning it in place or taking it to a dedicated facility makes more sense. Large rugs and busy households often do fine with on-site cleaning, since the rug stays in use and out of a vehicle. Rugs with dye that hasn't been tested, heavy embedded soil, or natural fibers like wool usually get more thorough results off-site, where water extraction and drying conditions can be controlled more closely than in a living room. We check the rug in person before recommending which approach fits it.
Area Rug Cleaning FAQs
Do you clean rugs on-site or do you take them off-site?
It depends on the rug's size, fiber and condition – some rugs clean well on-site, while others (especially wool or heavily soiled rugs) get better results off-site. We'll recommend an approach when you book.
Can you clean wool rugs safely?
Yes, wool just needs a different method than synthetic fiber – cooler temperatures and wool-safe solutions to avoid browning or fiber damage.
How long does a rug take to dry?
Depends on fiber, thickness and method – thinner synthetic rugs dry fastest, thick wool rugs take longest. We'll give you a realistic timeline for your rug.
Can you fix a fraying edge while cleaning my rug?
Yes, edge binding can usually be done alongside a cleaning job – mention it when you request your quote.
