If your carpet has started to ripple or feels loose underfoot, that’s usually a stretching problem rather than damage to the carpet itself. Customers often call about damage when the real cause is a carpet that was never properly stretched during its original installation. Repair is worth doing when the damage is contained to a small area and the rest of the carpet is still holding up. It stops making sense once wear is spread across the whole room – matted traffic paths, thinning pile near doorways, or fading that would make any patch stand out no matter how good the match. In that case, patching one spot on carpet that is failing everywhere else just delays a replacement you will need soon anyway, and it draws attention to the exact area you patched.
It also helps to act on damage sooner rather than later. A small snag or tear left alone tends to spread as foot traffic catches the loose edge, and cut or torn fibers next to a burn can start to fray and let backing show through. Furniture indentations are a separate issue entirely – those are compression marks, not damage, and often bounce back on their own rather than needing any repair at all.
We use carpet cut from a closet, remnant, or low-visibility area of the same room whenever possible, which gives the closest match. An exact dye-lot match from a different roll usually isn't possible after a carpet has faded from sunlight and wear.
