Many rugs, especially wool and handmade pieces, have fringe that's attached separately from the woven field. Fringe usually soils and yellows faster than the body of the rug because it takes the brunt of foot traffic, vacuum contact and furniture legs, but it's also more fragile and can't be scrubbed or agitated the way the pile can. We clean fringe with a gentler, more controlled process and make sure it's fully dry before the rug goes back into use, since damp fringe pressed against flooring or a baseboard can wick dirt back in or start to smell.
A rug's size, fiber and how soiled it is all factor into whether cleaning it in place or taking it to a dedicated facility makes more sense. Large rugs and busy households often do fine with on-site cleaning, since the rug stays in use and out of a vehicle. Rugs with dye that hasn't been tested, heavy embedded soil, or natural fibers like wool usually get more thorough results off-site, where water extraction and drying conditions can be controlled more closely than in a living room. We check the rug in person before recommending which approach fits it.
